Searching The following databases were searched from 1971 to 1998 (the search strategies used were provided in the report): MEDLINE, EMBASE, HealthSTAR, CINAHL, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The authors also examined reference lists, handsearched Respiratory Care (from 1997 to 1999), and searched their personal files. The authors did not search for unpublished studies.
